Take Action

Ready to join our fight for clean air? We engage directly with the AQMD to strengthen regulatory oversight by improving the implementation of existing rules and developing new rules mandating that the region’s biggest polluting industries do their part to reduce harmful emissions.

Here are some of the current opportunities to make our voices heard and push the AQMD towards better policies that will have meaningful and lasting impacts on the health and safety of all Southern Californians.

  • Emissions from SoCal’s petroleum storage tanks are a major threat to our health and our climate. Petroleum storage tanks endanger community members every day with leaks of harmful pollutants and toxic chemicals.

Dozens of crude oil storage tanks in the region lack domes to control the release of toxic pollution and refineries continue to use monitoring technologies that fail to identify some of the largest leaks.

Join us on Friday, September 1 to demand that the AQMD Board adopt amended rule 1178 to curb harmful emissions from these inherently dangerous petroleum storage tanks.

  • As the air regulator for the region, the AQMD is required to develop a regional blueprint – the Air Quality Management Plan or AQMP - for achieving air quality standards- but, most importantly, healthful air for residents of the region to breathe.

Currently, interests representing polluters are trying to make the plan weaker by asking for cost thresholds that will prioritize industry needs first and inhibit our ability to advance zero-emission regulations. These cynical efforts are gross and ignore the immense health consequences their operations impose on our health.

Join us on Friday, Dec 2nd to let the AQMD Board know that it's time to do more for breathers in our region. We cannot afford more of the same, and the loopholes and regulatory off-ramps that let polluters continue must stop.

  • Earthjustice released a report entitled Crossing the Fenceline: Critical Reforms to California’s Petroleum Refinery Emissions Monitoring Law. This report details the flaws in the implementation of California’s fenceline monitoring statute by the air districts, including inadequate notification to the public of excess emissions and lack of access to key data and information. In particular AQMD’s implementation of the law is inadequate as the air district has exempted certain refineries and has not included any type of root cause analysis or corrective action requirement when there is an exceedance of established emissions limits or health and safety thresholds.

  • The AQMD has a real opportunity to protect our health by passing a strong 2022 Air Quality Management Plan (AQMP) that includes support for zero emissions technology.

Sign Sierra Club’s petition to the Board of the AQMD and include a personalized comment telling them why clean air is important to you and your community.

  • The air district has published a schedule of hearings regarding the revised Air Quality Management Plan (AQMP). The AQMP is a blueprint for how the region can achieve air quality standards. Public health and air emissions reductions must be a priority at the air district and right now progress is slow and lackluster. Sierra Club, East Yard, and Earthjustice are organizing a webinar on September 28th at 6pm where you can learn more about future actions and what you can do to help strengthen the Clean Air Plan for the people!
